ISA Liwan is authorised by both Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and Pearson Edexcel to offer the relevant IGCSE and A Level courses and examinations.

Drawing on the teaching and assessment resources of both examination boards, the school plans learning pathways around subject characteristics and students’ needs. In particular, the modular structure of Pearson Edexcel IAL gives students flexibility to complete their studies and examinations in stages.

  • Guided Subject Selection | Connecting Academic Strengths with Future Goals

The school offers subjects including Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business, Accounting, Psychology, Computer Science, Art and Design, and Chinese.

With subject selection guidance, students choose three or four subjects that reflect their interests, academic strengths and university course requirements, connecting their studies at school with their intended field of study.

  • Personalised Teaching and Assessment | Targeted Support at Every Stage
The school develops and continually adjusts learning plans based on students’ starting points, classroom performance and ongoing assessments.Students who need to strengthen their foundations or overcome specific learning difficulties receive one-to-one tutoring, opportunities to ask questions after lessons and targeted support. Students ready to progress further are offered extension activities and more challenging academic tasks to develop their strengths.
Ongoing assessment informs adjustments to teaching and learning:
  • Formative assessment: As a general guideline, at least once a week to identify learning needs promptly.
  • Summative assessment: At least three times per semester to evaluate progress over a period of study.
  • Predicted grades: Regularly updated in light of AS examination results and subsequent performance to inform learning plans and university applications.
Teachers use this evidence to refine teaching priorities, individual support and learning plans, translating feedback into clear steps for improvement.

  • Academic English Throughout | Building Foundations for International Curricula and University Study

The school offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP), IELTS and TOEFL courses and examination support, alongside dedicated SAT preparation, integrating English language development throughout the A Level programme.

Students continually develop their skills in academic reading, essay writing, classroom discussion, communicating research and delivering presentations. This helps them adapt to subjects taught in English or bilingually, while meeting both application requirements and the practical demands of university study.

  • Coordinated Support | Connecting Academic Progress, Wellbeing and University Planning

Subject teachers, tutors and university counsellors communicate regularly to support each student’s development. Subject teachers focus on knowledge and academic progress; tutors monitor attendance, study habits and physical and emotional wellbeing; and university counsellors guide subject selection, the exploration of degree options and university applications.

The school also provides tailored guidance on course choices and applications for students pursuing art and design, ensuring that different aspirations are supported by appropriate planning.
